Materials: Red Heart med. wt. (4), 1 skein; crochet hook 5.00mm; crochet hook size K ( K = 6.5mm). Shaggy yarn, "Snuggle Up" by YarnBee, 1 skein;
Skill Level: Intermediate -- The pattern requires the maker to be able to make loose stitches and make the indicated stitches by feeling the spaces of previous round with fingers to determine where to insert the crochet hook to make the next stitch. Once the "Snuggle Up" yarn is in use on Round 11, the shagginess of this yarn covers most of the stitches so that the crocheter has to differentiate between the ch1-space (hole) and the sc-stitch (hole) by feel. The Ch1-space would feel bigger than the sc-stitch-space. The sc-stitch-space needs to be skipped and use the ch1-space only.
Crochet terms/abbreviations and their meaning:
R = RoundSlst = Slip stitch
Ch = Chain
Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = Single crochet
St = Stitch
* * = Repeat instructions inside asterisk once or over and over as specified.
( ) = Repeat instructions inside parenthesis as specified by the number beside it.
The Pattern
Use Red Heart Yarn for R1 to R10
Use 5.00mm crochet hook from R1 to R11. Leave 6-inch yarn tail (to weave in later). Crochet moderately tight by using the shaft of your crochet hook as your stitch gauge.
Ch 4, Slst on fourth ch from hook to form ring.
R1: Ch1, hdc on ring 12 times. Slst on beginning ch1 space. When counting the stitches on each row, do not count the beginning ch-1. Total number of stitches (Tns) = 12
R2: Ch1, (2hdc on next st) 12 times. Slst on beginning ch-1 space. Tns = 24
R3: Ch1, *hdc on each of next 2 stitches. 2 hdc on next st.* Repeat * * around.
Slst on beginning ch-1 space. Tns = 32
R4: Ch1, *hdc on each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc on next st.* Repeat * * around.
Slip stitch on beginning ch-1 space. Tns = 40
R5: Ch1, hdc on next stitch, *2hdc on next stitch, hdc on each of next 4 stitches.* Repeat * * around. Slst on beginning ch-1 space. Tns = 48
R6: Ch1, hdc on each of next 4 stitches, *2hdc on next st, hdc on each of next 5 stitches.*
Repeat * * around. Slst on beginning ch-1 space. Tns = 56
R7: Repeat R3. Tns = 74
R8: Repeat R6. Tns = 86
R9: Ch1, hdc on every stitch around. Slst on beginning ch-1 space. Tns = 86
R10: Repeat R9. Tns = 86
R11: Pick up (Snuggle Up) yarn leaving a 4-inch tail of this yarn and lay it along side the Red Heart yarn which you are currently working on; attach it by making beginning ch1 of round 11 using both the yarn currently used and the "snuggle up" yarn. Align the 4-inch tail with the stitches of previous row where you will be attaching the stitches of R 11, When working the current R 11, crochet over this yarn tail so that it is hidden within the stitches made. *Ch2, skip 2 sts, sc on next st.* Repeat * * around. Ch2, slst on beginning ch-2 loop or space. There are 28 loops on this round.
R12: Use K (6.5 mm.) crochet hook. Ch2, mark this stitch. Sc on next ch-2 loop or space. *Ch2, sc on next ch-2 loop or space.* Repeat * * around. Ch2, slst on beginning ch-2 loop or space. Total loop count (tlc) = 28.
R13: Repeat R12. Tlc = 28.
R14: Repeat R12. Tlc = 28.
Note: See that on R15 and remaining rounds, you make ch1-sc on next stitch as instructions
inside * *.
R 15: Ch2, mark this stitch. Sc on next ch-2 loop or space *Ch1, sc on next ch-2 loop or space.* Repeat around. Ch1, slst on beginning ch-2 loop.
At end of R16, check the circumference of the brim to see if it fits by fitting it on the head or matching it against the required head measurement. If, it is too loose change to the next smaller size hook and do as many rounds of R15 needed to obtain the desired depth of the brim.
R16: Use 5.5mm for small to medium; 5.75mm for large size. Ch2, mark this stitch. Sc on next ch-1 loop or space. *Ch1, skip next sc, sc on on next ch-1 space.* Repeat around. Ch1 slst on next ch-1 loop.
R17: Repeat R16. Fasten off as follows: Ch1, tighten this stitch, cut yarn leaving 6 inch tail. Use yarn needle to weave in tail ends within the stitches.
Have Fun Making and wearing the hat!
