Swim Wear Cover-Up

Tools And Materials:  Sports weight yarn, Category 3, 5 skeinsI of I Love This Yarn/230 yds/ skein; Crochet Hook 3.25 to 3.5mm Please Note that yarn yardage requirement is approximate only so if making xtra large size garment, more skeins of yarn (additional yardage) will be needed.

Gauge:  4 Filet Crochet (FC) = 2 inches; 4 rows of FC = 2 ¼  inch.

Crochet Tip:  When running out of yarn and has to attach a new skein of yarn, attach it in areas where the knot will be less obvious such as on sides of the garment or in places where the knots can be hidden by the round or row that follows. Example, at the end of row or at the beginning of row, so that the finishing stitches can hide the knot created.

Abbreviations, Terms, Definitions And Symbols Used:

Dc = Double crochet

Sc = Single crochet

Slst = Slip stitch

Fc= Filet crochet:  How to make Filet Crochet on foundation chain:  R1,  ch3, dc on 5th ch from hook, first fc made,  *ch1, skip 1 ch, dc on next ch.*   Rep * * across to last chain; R2, ch3, dc on next dc.  *Ch1, dc on next dc*.  Rep * * across.  Ch1, slst on 2nd ch of beginning ch-3.

Fcsp = Filet crochet space, the space between 2dc stitches and under ch-1.

Beginning chain = The initial chains made at beginning of round, this is also called turning chain when making a row by row  crocheted fabric.

Mark labels:

Side mark = Sdl marks the left side of chest/back piece.

Side mark = Sdr marks the right side of chest/back piece.

Under arm = UA, marks where the underarm seam begins.

Neck Center = Nc, marks the center of the neck area.  Locate this by folding the crocheted work, with both sleeves lined up together evenly.  Mark the stitch that falls on the fold, this is the neck center or nc.

The Pattern:

Making The Chest Piece.  See “1” on Diagram II.

Determine chest circumference, see “C” in  Diagram I:

Using tape measure in inches, measure fullest part of chest and add 1 inch - for close fit, 1 and ½, for moderate fit, 2 inches for loose fit.

Final Chest Circumference =__40 ½  (Eva)________Make any number of chains that measures the same as the Final Chest Circumference.  If Total number of chains (Tnc) cannot be divided by 4, round it up to the nearest number that can be divided by 4.  The rounded number is your final foundation chain.  See Diagram I.

Foundation chain 136 (Eva)

Note:  Working in rounds.

R = Means round on this part of the pattern.

R1:  Ch4.  Dc on 6th ch from hook.   See Lesson 1 diagram below.  *Ch1, sk 1 ch, dc on next ch.*. Repeat * * across.   After last dc, ch1, slst on 2nd ch from beginning dc, (counting from the first dc made at beginning).  See photo of Lesson 2 below.

Filet Crochet Diagram Lesson 1- How To Begin Row 1

Filet Crochet Diagram Lesson  2

Join the ends of foundation chains together by using the yarn tail as your working end and make a slst on 2nd ch from beginning dc, as shown on photo above on Lesson 2.  Pull the tail of the yarn through the loop on hook to fasten off (close the stitch).

[ ] = means mark this stitch just made.

R2: Ch3, [ ], dc on next dc.  *Ch1, dc on next dc.*. Rep * * around.  Ch1, slst on 2nd ch of marked beginning ch-3.

Repeat R2 until  the measurement of rows =  the measurement of Chest Length__7 inches (Eva)__.  Note:  When measuring the Chest length of Chest/Back crocheted piece, moderately stretch it down, because the weight of the skirt that will be added later will pull the piece down.  See “D” on Diagram I.  My Chest/Back piece has 12 rows, which measures 6 inches relaxed but measures 7” when moderately stretched.  Do not break yarn after last round but tie it in shoe- lace fashion so work does not unravel.

{{ Making The Front Sleeve, Upper Chest, And Neck Shaping.  See “2” in Diagram II.

Measure arm from armpit to preferred sleeve length, example, above elbow or below elbow.  See “E” on Diagram I.  Sleeve length (SL) = 10 inches, (Eva)_________

Fold the crocheted Chest piece at the last slst, where the last round ended and mark the ch-3 where last slst is attached. This is one side of the Chest piece, .  Mark the dc stitch on the other side opposite this marked st.  These marked stitches are where foundation chains to make the sleeves are going to be attached.  Call the marked stitch “SDR” (right side mark), “SDL” (left side mark).  Attach a new skein of yarn to SDL marked  stitch.  See Photo below.

From Sdl make foundation chains for this sleeve which measure the same as Sleeve length (SL).  Sleeve Length (Eva) = 10 inches.

Make the foundation chain as per above instructions.  Write down the Foundation Ch ( total number of chains that met Sleeve Length measurement =_36 chains(Eva).  This number will be used again for the total number of chains for the other section of sleeves, such as the right side - front section opposite this one just made, then the right and left back section of sleeve.  fasten off.   Resume work on other side (Sdr), and make the total number of chains the same as the one just made on SDL.

Work in Rows R = Row

R1:  Ch3.  Dc on 5th ch from hook. *Ch1, sk 1 st, dc on next st.*. Rep * * across sleeve foundation chains.  Ch1, dc on top of marked “sdr” st, *ch1, dc on next dc,* repeat * * across chest/back piece, see “1” on Diagram II below.  Ch1, dc on marked SDL.  *Ch1, sk 1 ch, dc on next ch.*   Rep * * across.  Ch1, dc on last ch.  Turn.

R2:  Ch3, [ ], dc on next  dc, *ch1, dc on next dc.*. Rep * * across, ch1, slst on 2nd ch of beginning ch-3.  Turn.

R3 up to any number of rows that measures the same as sleeve width.  See “B” on Diagram I.  Sleeve width = 8 inches (Eva).  Repeat R2.  Write down how many rows it took that measure the same as sleeve width.   Total number of rows that equals Sleeve Width =________.  You wil use this same number of rows to make the back/front counterpart.

Shaping The Neckline

Mark neckpoints:  See photos below and “H” on Diagram I.

Note: Number on the photo is based on my body measurement.  It will vary from person to person.

R ___?  Note:  Make 1 shell on N1:  Ch3, dc on next dc, *ch1, dc on next dc.*  Rep * * up to N1.  On marked st N1, do:  ch1, dc on N1, (Ch1, dc on same st) 2 x.  Note:  1 shell made.  Note:  Shape the scoop of the neck by:  Ch1, skip 1 dc, Hdc on next dc.  *Ch1, hdc on next dc.*  Repeat * * across but skip 1 dc post before the marked st N2, ch1, dc on N2, (Ch1, dc on same st) 2x.  Note: 1 shell is made and neck shaping is made on this round.    After the shell, ch1,  skip next dc, dc on next dc. *Ch1, dc on next dc.*. Repeat instructions for making front sleeves, back and neck by repeating instructions within {{ }}.  Do not break yarn, but use it to join back and front shoulders/sleeves.

NOTE:

This Beach Cover Up is very loose fitting,  To make a more fitted top,

omit R14 - R15.on Sleeves.  For Bodice:  Measure fullest part of chest and add 1 inch.  DO 8 ROUNDS ON BODICE.  I USED YARNBEE SPORTS WEIGHT. FOR FITTED TOP.

Joining The Front And Back Sleeves:  Wrong sides facing together, align back and front sleeves together.  Right sides facing out:

A = label the sleeves closest to you as “A”;

B = label the sleeves farther from you as “B”

Note:  From last loop of B, ch3, sc on 2nd ch of A.  Note:  Make  the finishing loop stitches of A and at the same time connecting these loops to finished loops of B.

From A,{ *ch1, sc on ch-3 sp-B, ch1, sc on next dc of A; ch1, dc on next ch-3 loop of B; ch1, sc on 2nd dc of next shell-A. *}. Rep * * accross.    After joining the loops on top of tr shells and from sc on last tr post, ch3, sc on next sc, *ch1, sc on next hdc.*

Making The Lace  Skirt And Doing Crochet In The Rounds.

Fcsp = Filet crochet space

Fcsps = Filet crochet spaces

Mark the dc that falls on the side seam of the bodice on each side.  Call this S1, S2.

Count and take note the total number of Fcsps on the bottom of bodice.  Ideally this number should be divisible by 4 in order to have a complete motif.  If not divisible by 4.  Make extra ch-3 loops at each side seam to meet the needed number.  To do this, mark the center of both the front and back of bodice.  From the center mark, count and mark every 4 sts, marking every 4th stitch.  Across to the side.  Do the same for the opposite side;  repeat the same for the back or front of the bodice Note:  Chest + upper chest piece = Bodice.

Attach yarn on S1,

R1:  Ch4, sc on next fcsp, *ch3, sc on next fcsp.*. Rep * * across to S1, remembering to add half of the needed ch-3 loops to make up the required total number of loops for the lace pattern.  Rep * * across to S2 and add half of the needed ch-3 loops to make up the required total number of loops for the lace pattern.  Ch3 slst on 2nd ch of ch-4, counting from last sc.

R2:   Ch4, sc on next fcsp, *ch3, sc on next fcsp.*. Rep * * around. Slst on base of ch-4.

Begin the lace stitches starting on R3.  Bodice right side up.

[ ] = Means mark this stitch just made.

Shaggy Scarf -- To Match Snuggly Hat #1

Use 10mm crochet hook,
Yarn:  2 Skeins of  Snuggly by YarnBee; 1 skein of super saver Red heart med, wt. (4) --

Use these 2 yarns together.

Tip:  Watch out for accidentally dropping either yarn off the hook while working.  This can happen without you noticing it until several stitches or rows so see that both yarns are together at all times.

Ch 23.  Chains on every row must be done loosely, about half inch each stitch.

R1:  Sc on 3rd ch from hook.  Note:  Catch both front and back loop of each stitch.   Note:  This is very important:  From this row until project is completed, make all sc stitches tight
and ch-1 stitches loose about half inch diameter,  this technique will avoid the mistake of inserting hook on sc stitch when it should be inserted on ch-1 space only. *Ch-1, skip 1  ch, sc on next ch.*  Repeat * * across.  There are Approximately  10 to 11 Ch-1 loops  or spaces when row is completed. Turn.

To keep a straight edge, keep track of the total number of ch-1 loops or spaces on each row.
Number of ch-1  loop on each row should be the same all the way through until scarf is completed.

R2:  Ch2, sc on next ch-1 space .  Since you cannot see the stitch because of the shagginess of the yarn, use your finger to feel the hole or the ch-1 space to determine where to insert the hook.
*Ch1, sc on next ch-1 space.*. Repeat * * across, ch1, sc on beginning ch-2. Turn.

How to attach new yarn:  When one of the yarn being used ran out, draw up the new yarn leaving a 6 inch tail, along with the old yarn.  Lay the tails along side the stitches you will be attaching the current row and crochet over these tails to hide them underneath the new stitches.

Repeat R2 until desired length of the scarf is completed.

Ch1 and fasten off leaving 6 inch yarn tail.  Weave in yarn tail.

Snuggly Hat #1 v1 -- (Russian Hat)

Materials:  Red Heart med. wt. (4), 1 skein; crochet hook 5.00mm;  crochet hook size K ( K = 6.5mm).  Shaggy yarn, "Snuggle Up" by YarnBee, 1 skein;

Skill Level:  Intermediate  -- The pattern requires the maker to be able to make loose stitches and make the indicated stitches by feeling the spaces of previous round with fingers to determine where to insert the crochet hook to make the next stitch.   Once the "Snuggle Up" yarn is in use on Round 11, the shagginess of this yarn covers most of the stitches so that the crocheter has  to differentiate between the ch1-space (hole) and the sc-stitch (hole) by feel.  The Ch1-space would feel bigger than the sc-stitch-space.  The sc-stitch-space needs to be skipped and use the ch1-space only.

Crochet terms/abbreviations and their meaning:

R = Round
Slst = Slip stitch
Ch = Chain
Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = Single crochet
St = Stitch
* * = Repeat instructions inside asterisk once or over and over as specified.
( ) = Repeat instructions inside parenthesis as specified by the number beside it.

The Pattern

Use Red Heart Yarn for R1 to R10
Use 5.00mm crochet hook from R1 to R11.  Leave 6-inch yarn tail (to weave in later).  Crochet moderately tight by using the shaft of your crochet hook as your stitch gauge.

Ch 4, Slst on fourth ch from hook to form ring.

R1:  Ch1, hdc on ring 12 times.  Slst on beginning ch1 space.   When counting the stitches on each row, do not count the beginning ch-1.   Total number of stitches (Tns) = 12

R2:  Ch1, (2hdc on next st) 12 times.  Slst on beginning ch-1 space.  Tns = 24

R3:  Ch1, *hdc on each of next 2 stitches. 2 hdc on next st.*  Repeat * * around.
Slst on beginning ch-1 space.  Tns = 32

R4:  Ch1, *hdc on each of next 3 sts,  2 hdc on next st.*  Repeat * * around.
Slip stitch on beginning ch-1 space.  Tns = 40

R5:  Ch1, hdc on next stitch, *2hdc on next stitch, hdc on each of next 4 stitches.*   Repeat * * around.  Slst on beginning ch-1 space.  Tns = 48

R6:  Ch1, hdc on each of next 4 stitches, *2hdc on next st, hdc on each of next 5 stitches.*
Repeat * * around.  Slst on beginning ch-1 space.   Tns = 56
R7:  Repeat R3.  Tns = 74
R8:  Repeat R6.  Tns = 86
R9:  Ch1, hdc on every stitch around.  Slst on beginning ch-1 space.  Tns = 86
R10: Repeat R9.  Tns = 86

R11: Pick up (Snuggle Up) yarn  leaving a 4-inch tail of this yarn  and lay it along side the Red Heart yarn which you are currently working on; attach it by making beginning ch1 of round 11 using both the yarn currently used and the "snuggle up" yarn.  Align the 4-inch tail with the stitches of previous row where you will be attaching the stitches of R 11,  When working the current R 11, crochet over this yarn tail so that it is hidden within the stitches made.  *Ch2, skip 2 sts, sc on next st.* Repeat * * around.   Ch2, slst on beginning ch-2 loop or space. There are 28 loops on this round.

R12:  Use K  (6.5 mm.) crochet hook.   Ch2, mark this stitch.  Sc on next ch-2 loop or space.  *Ch2, sc on next ch-2 loop or space.*   Repeat * * around.  Ch2,  slst on beginning ch-2 loop or space.  Total loop count (tlc) = 28.
R13:   Repeat R12.  Tlc = 28.
R14:   Repeat R12.  Tlc = 28.

Note:  See that on R15 and remaining rounds, you make ch1-sc on next stitch as instructions
inside * *.

R 15:  Ch2, mark this stitch.  Sc on next ch-2  loop or space  *Ch1, sc on next ch-2 loop or space.*  Repeat around.  Ch1, slst on beginning ch-2 loop.

At end of R16, check the circumference of the brim to see if it fits by fitting it on the head or matching it against the required head measurement.  If, it is too loose change to the next smaller size hook and do as many rounds of R15 needed to obtain the desired depth of the brim.

R16:  Use 5.5mm for small to medium; 5.75mm for large size.  Ch2, mark this stitch.   Sc on next ch-1 loop or space.  *Ch1, skip next sc, sc on on next ch-1 space.*  Repeat around.  Ch1 slst on next ch-1 loop.

R17:  Repeat R16.  Fasten off as follows: Ch1, tighten this stitch, cut yarn leaving 6 inch tail.  Use yarn needle to weave in tail ends within the stitches.
